Project.12: Bridges

Standard

I decided to approach this month’s Project.12 theme abstractly instead of literally. A bridge is a wonderful metaphor — to me it especially stands for strength and safety. And I also think of strength and safety when I think of my husband, Ben, so I concocted a plan to photograph him for “Bridges,” but I knew I’d have to be creative if he was going to go along with it. He’s a great sport but he doesn’t love to have his picture taken. My first thought was finding a bridge over water safe enough for him to jump, so that I could have a literal bridge included in the theme. No such luck, though, so I asked if I could photograph him working out.

My husband is a helicopter rescue swimmer for the U.S. Coast Guard. Staying fit is a big part of a rescue swimmer’s job, and Ben takes it very seriously. Peoples’ lives can (and have) depended on his body’s strength, agility, and stamina.

Ben’s strength isn’t just physical. He is mentally strong (also important in his line of work) and spiritually strong. He leads our family with wisdom and humility. He is the goofiest and most caring and devoted father. He is a thoughtful and loyal husband. He cares for our home, manages our finances impeccably, and shows us all what it looks like to love and follow God. He is the epitome of a strong man, one with whom I feel safe. He is my bridge.
